BIO
"I never feel as though I am merely having my photograph taken. I feel part of something creative and lasting. On film, Edward can capture what I want to say through music."
-Oscar Peterson
Inspired by the great masters of photography, Edward Gajdel's creative style is based on formalism and simplicity. Although passionate about the power of black and white photography, his techniques and range of work are diverse. On every shoot he brings an empathetic sensibility that draws him naturally to the essence of his subjects.
His curiosity and fascination for photography was established by the time he arrived in Alberta, Canada at the age of eight from Poland. As a young man, he attended the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology and studied Art History at the University of Calgary. Upon graduation, he left for California and spent time at a workshop with Michel Tcherevkoff, then left for Paris and Milan where he photographed individuals such as Christian LaCroix and embarked on photo journalistic projects for publishing houses like Bayard Press.
Edward has since emerged into one of the world's leading portrait photographers. His work has been widely praised and he has won numerous awards from an array of organizations such as American Photography, Applied Arts, the National Magazine Awards, the World Press Organization and Communication Arts.
For over twenty-five years, Edward has artistically captured the images of his subjects for editorial, advertising, fashion and corporate clients. From poets to politicians, actors to corporate leaders, his portfolio includes impressive and accomplished individuals from leaders of nations to the premier celebrities of Hollywood.
His work has been published in many prestigious photography journals and magazines such as Rolling Stone, GQ, Elle, Photo Pro of New York, Photo District News and the Annual of American Photography. Kodak International published a piece that recognized him as one of the world's unique and talented international portrait photographers.
His work is part of the permanent collection at the Canadian Museum of Civilization, the Museum of Contemporary Photography and at the Royal Ontario Museum as part of their permanent collection entitled "Fifty Years of Advertising and Design in Canada".
Edward has built a studio in Toronto according to his own specifications and unique vision. The result is an inviting, cosmopolitan, creative and professional space that reflects his working philosophy and commitment to developing projects from around the world.
In addition to his unique technical approach, Edward possesses a quiet elegance and savvy as well as a passion and sincerity that only further enhance his already exquisite and poignant images.
