BIO
The early part of Struan’s colourful life was spent mostly in Europe: London, Paris, Geneva and Cairo. He landed in Montreal, Canada, to enter University before moving to Toronto for a one year stint at Ryerson Photo Arts, and then opened his own photography studio in 1970.
As a ‘people’ specialist, his vivid, compelling beauty and fashion advertising photographs are the result of a highly refined sense of style, impeccable lighting, and technically flawless shooting. In the early eighties he
opened another studio in Chicago, to handle some of his American clients.
Besides his speaking engagements, seminars and photographic workshops in Europe, the U.S, and Canada, Struan’s photographs have been exhibited at various galleries, the most recent being at the prestigious PARIS PHOTO exhibition at Le Carrousel du Louvre in Paris, France.
Struan has numerous awards to his credit: Clio award for his U.S. advertising work; Studio Magazine Awards; the National Hasselblad Awards (Gold, Silver & Bronze); (Gold & Silver) in the National CAPIC Awards Show; B&W Spider Award U.S. He is in the Kodak’s ‘Vision in View’ video series that toured North America and the first and only fashion photographer to be placed in the permanent collection of The National Archives of Canada.
Struan’s images have been published in countless Magazines and countries ranging from JCA International (Japan), Jardin des Modes, Photo and Figaro (France), Cosmopolitan, InStyle, American Photo, PDN, and LA Style (USA), to Color Foto (Germany), Photo (Russia) and Applied Arts, Studio Magazine, Flare, Chatelaine, Photo Life and FQ (Canada), to Creative Advertising (England), and covers for both Creative Source (Canada), and Art Director’s Index to Photographers (Europe).
His roster of celebrity photographs run from John Candy, Wayne Gretsky and Ronnie Hawkins to Nelson Mandela, Karen Kain and India Hicks, to name but a few.
Struan’s Client list is impressive to say the least... Clairol, Reebok, American Express, Polaroid, Labatt
Breweries, Bata International, Coty, Bell Atlantic, Elizabeth Arden, A&M Records, Proctor & Gamble, Kodak,
Rogers Communications, AT&T, Motorola, Helene Curtis, Seagram’s, Carlsberg, Alfred Sung, Lipton’s, Club Med, Ilford, Adidas, Kenzo, Rolex, Fiat, Nestlé, Warners, Head & Shoulders, Nikon, Finesse, Karl Lagerfeld, Wonderbra, Pepsi Cola, and so on.
Struan uses urban and architectural backdrops strikingly, and many of his images have a narrative quality to them. His black & white work has a ‘film-noir’ style, stark, deeply shadowed and evocative. His ultimate skill is breathing life, emotion, and passion into a successful strategic statement.
